Career and Focus
After working for a private Houston real estate company, Campo and Oden founded the predecessor companies to Camden in 1982. Campo guided the company through its initial public offering in 1993 and served as CEO until 2026. Camden’s board biography reports that its assets grew from approximately $200 million at the IPO to more than $16 billion, along with a national footprint. This growth reflected acquisitions and development as well as the creation of operating capabilities in construction, property management, technology and employee training.
In 2026, after a multiyear succession process, Campo moved from CEO to executive chairman. Alex Jessett became CEO, while Campo remained in an executive role and continued to serve as chairman of Camden’s board. His public service includes chairing the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority and serving as president of the Houston Independent School District Board of Managers. He has also held leadership roles at Nareit and the National Multifamily Housing Council. Campo graduated from Oregon State University. Camden’s current portfolio—more than 56,000 apartments across the U.S. as of August 2026—reflects the scale reached under the founders’ leadership, but is operated by the current management team.
