The Sam Zell Successors

“The Sam Zell Successors” is a collective reference to the organizations and people who continued managing Zell family capital after Sam Zell’s death in 2023; it is not an individual biography. Zell’s investment and family-office structure is organized through Chai Trust, the family’s private trust company, which describes two principal divisions: Equity Group Investments (EGI) and the Zell Family Office. EGI makes direct investments in privately held companies, while the family office provides financial, trust and personal services to the family. EGI is a diversified private-investment firm with a long history in real estate, including Zell’s earlier leadership of Equity Office Properties Trust and Equity Residential. Its own 2024 overview identifies Mark Sotir as president and describes a 40-person team, evidence that the investment firm continued under a professional team after Zell’s death.
