Career and Focus

Mathrani’s early property career included Forest City and Vornado, where he led retail operations before moving to GGP in 2011. GGP was then emerging from Chapter 11; Mathrani became its chief executive during a period of balance-sheet recovery and portfolio repositioning. Brookfield agreed to acquire GGP in 2018 in a transaction valued at roughly $15 billion, and Mathrani subsequently led Brookfield Properties’ retail group as vice chairman. The company contexts differ: GGP and Brookfield were owners and operators of shopping centers, while WeWork’s flexible-workspace model combined real estate commitments with a service business.

In 2020 Mathrani became WeWork’s CEO, succeeding a founder-led period marked by the company’s failed IPO attempt. He departed in 2023. His recent work returned to property investment: a 2026 Host Hotels proxy describes his more than 37 years of real estate experience across WeWork, Brookfield, GGP, Vornado and Forest City, and he is identified as founder of Atlas Hill RE. In 2025, Atlas Hill and partners acquired Annapolis Mall, illustrating a return to direct retail-property investment. Mathrani earned engineering and management-science degrees at Stevens Institute of Technology. His career is notable for transitions between public REIT leadership, institutional ownership, a high-profile workspace operator and private investment.
