He joined Wharf’s board in 1978 and became its chairman in 1986. Woo’s career began in banking at Chase Manhattan before he joined his father-in-law Y.K. Pao’s shipping group in Hong Kong. In 1986, he took leadership of Wheelock and Wharf, whose portfolio included major commercial and retail properties such as Harbour City and Times Square. The business combined property ownership and development with ports, retail and other operating assets. That diversified structure formed the platform through which Woo oversaw the group’s commercial property interests. Wheelock corporate overview · Our Hong Kong Foundation biography
After retiring from the listed-company boards, Woo continued as executive chairman of World International Capital Group, the family’s private holding company, and has remained active in civic and education initiatives. Wheelock itself was taken private and delisted in 2020. His present role is therefore distinct from the former listed-company chairmanship recorded in many older biographies.
