Open Questions And Unverified Items
- Initial capital and exact founding date. Oaktree's own pages say 1995; "April 1995" comes from Oaktree's 25th-anniversary framing. Initial capital was not found.
- Founder count. Oaktree says five founders. A secondary company-history site lists seven, including Russell Bernard and Stephen Kaplan. Use Oaktree's five.
- 2019 closing date. The FY2025 10-K's definitions split Oaktree at 2019-09-30/2019-10-01, consistent with a 2019-09-30 closing, but no preserved document states the closing outright.
- Closing share in 2019. Announced as about 62%; Oaktree's timeline says 61%; the exact closing percentage was not confirmed in a preserved primary document. The 2019 deal's dollar value appears as about $4.7B and about $4.8B in secondary sources and is not stated here.
- Management succession. The 2026 completion release names Robert O'Leary and Armen Panossian as Co-CEOs of Brookfield's Credit Group. Trade press dates their Oaktree Co-CEO succession of Jay Wintrob to a June 2023 announcement (effective Q1 2024) and Wintrob's hiring to late 2014; the original releases were not preserved, so only the 2014 hiring year (Oaktree's own timeline) is stated above.
- Historic restructurings (Charter, Aleris, Tribune, Hertz, AmTrust/FDIC auction, Pangaea, 1988 first TCW distressed fund). Appeared only in search snippets or encyclopedic summaries; not preserved, so excluded from the tables.
- Opportunities Fund XI close (about $15.9B, November 2021) and the 2007 Goldman Sachs private offering of Oaktree units (Goldman was initial purchaser of a 144A offering in May 2007; a "15% stake for $880M" figure is secondary only).
- Marks-era Citicorp/TCW deals (Texaco, Continental Airlines and similar) and any Marks-personal role in a specific Oaktree transaction: no citable source found. The 2008 distressed buying, the COVID-era memos and similar episodes are documented at firm level and through Marks's memos, not as personal trades.
- Personal biography (birthplace, family, philanthropy, net worth) rests on encyclopedic summaries and is intentionally omitted from Howard Marks pending primary support.
