Lowy family / Westfield lineage

The Lowy family founded and built the original Westfield shopping-center business in Australia. Frank Lowy and business partner John Saunders opened the first Westfield center in Blacktown in 1959; the business grew into a major listed shopping-center owner and operator. Frank’s sons Steven and Peter later held leadership roles in the company. The subsequent Lowy Group is a separate private property and hospitality business founded by Peter Lowy in London, not the former Westfield operating group. This record describes a family lineage and corporate succession, not one person. Under Frank Lowy’s leadership, Westfield expanded from Australian retail centers into an international property platform, including a substantial U.S. portfolio. Steven and Peter Lowy served as joint chief executives before the company’s 2018 acquisition by Unibail-Rodamco; the Westfield brand and many centers now sit within Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. The corporate history is best understood in three stages: Frank Lowy’s founding and expansion of Westfield; the next generation’s executive leadership; and the sale of the listed group to URW, after which Westfield ceased to be a standalone listed family-controlled operator.
