Gilbert launched Rock Financial in 1985, later renamed Quicken Loans and now known as Rocket Mortgage. In 2010, the company moved its headquarters to downtown Detroit, bringing thousands of employees to the Compuware Building. Bedrock was founded the following year to pursue real estate investment and development in Detroit and Cleveland.

Known For

Bedrock has assembled and operated an urban portfolio that combines offices, retail, housing, hotels, and entertainment. Recent projects include Hudson's Detroit, a mixed-use downtown tower, and City Modern, a mixed-income residential development in the Brush Park neighborhood. Bedrock says City Modern delivered 450 residences in 2025. Gilbert has publicly described the company as part of his broader effort to support downtown investment and city-building.

Gilbert is Bedrock's founder and chairman, not its day-to-day CEO. The company's August 2025 succession announcement said Jared Fleisher would move from president to CEO after Kofi Bonner's retirement at year-end 2025.
