Craig Leupold

Craig Leupold is chief executive officer of GSI Capital Advisors, which invests in publicly traded real estate securities. His career combines real estate finance, consulting, sector research and investment management; he is best known for leading Green Street Advisors through a period of expansion and two private-equity transactions.

Career and Focus

Leupold’s experience before Green Street included real estate consulting at Kenneth Leventhal & Company and real estate finance at Union Bank of California. He joined Green Street’s residential research effort and established coverage of apartments, student housing and manufactured housing. He became president in 2007, with responsibility for the investment community relationship and client interactions, before becoming chief executive officer. GSI’s account of his 12-year tenure says the firm roughly tripled revenue, increased headcount four-fold and completed two sales to private-equity firms. Those are company-reported outcomes, rather than measures of any individual investment return.

Leupold now leads GSI Capital Advisors. The firm’s public profile describes its strategy as investing in real estate securities, while Leupold’s own Green Street experience was grounded in property-sector research. His education includes an MBA in finance and real estate from Columbia University and a BA from the University of California, San Diego. GSI also identifies him as a director of Sun Communities; that board position is separate from his investment-management role.
