Career and Focus

Schall joined AvalonBay as president and a director in January 2021, then became CEO in January 2022. Before AvalonBay, he was president and CEO and a trustee of Seritage Growth Properties, a retail and mixed-use REIT. From 2012 to 2015 he served as COO of Rouse Properties, which owned regional malls and retail centers, and earlier was a senior vice president at Vornado Realty Trust, with office and retail assets concentrated in New York and other major U.S. cities. This progression gave him experience across retail repositioning, mixed-use property and multifamily operations.

AvalonBay and Equity Residential announced a merger of equals in May 2026 and subsequently presented Schall as CEO and president of the proposed combined company, Vivmark Residential, upon closing. The transaction closed August 17, 2026. His current Vivmark and PulteGroup biographies confirm the completed leadership change. Schall’s board and industry service includes Nareit, the National Multifamily Housing Council and The Real Estate Roundtable. He earned a BA from Swarthmore College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
